Have you ever considered adding a stock pond or lake to your property?  Adding a water resource to your farm or ranch can not only increase the value of your land, but also provide years of additional activities and entertainment. Before you call your cousin Billy with his bulldozer, make sure to read an article written about one of our owners, Ken Craig, and his years of expertise in Texas Stock Tank and Lake Construction.

TEXAS LAND BANK ARTICLE

Ken has been building ponds and lakes in Texas for over 25 years.  That experience has taught him that careful planning and research are necessary before you turn the key on the first piece of equipment.  The three most important factors of determining where to build a pond or water resource are topography, the purpose of the resource, and geology.  Topography is key when considering the available watershed.  The size of the available watershed and the typical yearly rainfall will directly dictate how large of a pond you can build.  It’s important not to over build because a half empty pond can be a liability and an eyesore.  The Geology (or soil type) of a potential lake site cannot be overlooked.  If the soil is too sandy or rocky, it might not necessarily provide the seal needed to maintain the water level desired.  In this case, you might have to import a more clay-like soil or consider the use of a bentonite liner.  At Farm and Ranch Construction, we collaborate with a Civil Engineer on every water project to answer these questions and more before the project even starts.
