Whether for private owners or major industries, the management of water resources is critical and increasingly represents one of the biggest challenges facing Texas and the Southwest.

The growing demand for basic water resources, along with recreational needs has become a major concern.  The long-term effects of drought conditions call for foresight, informed planning, and the employment of best practices to insure an abundant supply of water both now and into the future.
Farm and Ranch Construction approaches all water related projects, large or small, with this in mind. We know that all across Texas, the private stock tanks that we build to water livestock also serve as a significant habitat and resource for wildlife, including migrant and resident waterfowl and deer. The ponds that we build to add distinction to your landscape equal possibilities for recreational activities like fishing. A beautiful lake on your property offers all sorts of entertaining possibilities for boating, swimming, and water skiing.

Our designs and expert hydrological services will help insure a dependable supply of fresh water for your livestock, wildlife, crops, and people. Whatever your vision or water resource needs, whatever the size or complexity, we can help you realize them. We start with a thorough examination of the property, including soil analysis and evaluation. Depending on your requirements, budget, and location, we use bentonite cutoff walls and liners of bentonite or PVC to ensure a stable water level. The fill from a new excavation can be used for landscaping or to add features like boat ramps and runways—whatever you desire. We can also stock fingerlings including catfish, bass, and crappie, and provide aquatic vegetation. We can install fish feeders, fountains or any number of unique features.

Soil-Bentonite Cutoff walls are a productive way to keep pond and lake dams from seeping.  The cutoff wall is excavated in a continuous manner under bentonite slurry.  The cutoff is keyed in most cases into an impervious stratum or bedrock.  Bentonite “filler cake” is developed on each wall of the trench, and slurry enters any formational voids adjacent to the trench.

Impervious backfill is placed into the trench, displacing slurry to form the completed cutoff.  Backfill includes soil excavated from the trench and/or from borrowed materials which are blended with slurry to yield a homogeneous mixture with a consistency corresponding to a 3-6 inch clump.  Native clay in the backfilled mixture increases its density, but if not enough clay is present, Bentonite is added to the mix. Soil-Bentonite cutoff walls have been used for many years as permanent cutoffs through and below dams and as temporary cutoffs to minimize the flow of groundwater into large excavations.

You may just want a small stock pond for your livestock or a big lake that helps to provide a safe habitat for wildlife. Having a beautiful lake on your property means that you will consistently have birds, deer, squirrels, rabbits and all types of wild animals coming to bathe and drink.

Contributing to the habitation needs for turkey, quail or endangered birds like the Golden Cheek Warbler and the Black Capped Vireo is not only an enjoyable pastime but also benefits the environment. By stocking your pond, tank or lake with various types of fish, you can also create a fun place to go fishing with your family or just a secluded swimming hole.
